Kustom strengthens leading position in the Nordics – acquires Vipps MobilePay Checkout in a deal valued up to NOK 490m
In addition to the acquisition, the companies enter a strategic distribution partnership, making Kustom a recommended checkout partner for Vipps MobilePay. Kustom considers the deal a key step in its continued European expansion, while Vipps MobilePay sharpens its focus as a digital wallet and broadens its reach across the Nordics through wider distribution.
The acquisition of Vipps MobilePay Checkout, through its merchant contracts and volume, adds more than 3,000 merchants to Kustom’s platform and increases transaction volume by approximately NOK 7 billion.
“Our long-term ambition is to revolutionize European commerce. This acquisition cements our leading position in the Nordics and unlocks significant opportunities – not least through greater volume, expanded geographic presence and a strategically important partnership. Vipps MobilePay has done an incredible job building the checkout, and we’re excited to deepen our collaboration,” says Kamjar Hajabdolahi, CEO of Kustom.
As part of the deal, Kustom becomes a recommended checkout partner for Vipps MobilePay. This means merchants looking to offer Vipps MobilePay’s payment methods will be directed to Kustom’s checkout, and that Kustom’s merchants will be offered Vipps MobilePay’s product portfolio. Beyond this, the two companies will also collaborate more closely on distribution and product development.
Vipps MobilePay Checkout has been part of Vipps MobilePay, the combined entity formed by the merger of Norwegian-based Vipps and Danish-based MobilePay. The company has built the most widely used digital wallet in the Nordics, with more than 12 million users. Through the divestiture, Vipps MobilePay streamlines its operations around its core digital wallet offering while doubling down on distribution and accessibility.
“Vipps MobilePay is built on one core belief: payments should be easy. To achieve that, we need to be available wherever people shop. With Kustom as a partner, you will find Vipps and MobilePay in more online shops, faster than we could on our own. We are proud of what we have built with Vipps MobilePay Checkout and the value we have created. At the same time, we face increasing competition from global tech companies. To compete more effectively, we must sharpen our role as a digital wallet, strengthen distribution through partners and focus fully on the customer experience,” says Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay.
Vipps MobilePay Checkout merchants will be migrated to Kustom’s platform on a rolling basis starting in Q2 2026, with the full transition expected to be completed in early 2027. The specifics of each migration will depend on the merchant’s current setup.
“This deal creates clear, tangible value for merchants. Those who have been using Vipps MobilePay Checkout keep their existing pricing while gaining access to a more powerful checkout with a broader range of services and capabilities. We look forward to welcoming Vipps MobilePay Checkout’s merchants to Kustom,” says Kamjar Hajabdolahi.
