Kustom launches Pay by Bank payments for Finnish merchants
Checkout solution Kustom is now adding Pay by Bank in Finland to better support local merchants by meeting demand of Finnish shoppers. Instant bank payment is the most preferred direct payment method for online purchases in Finland according to Kustom research.
In Finland, merchants using Kustom’s payment services are now able to offer Pay by Bank as a new payment method in their online stores, providing Finnish consumers with a familiar and seamless way to pay for online purchases directly. The rollout begins this month and will soon be available to all Kustom merchants. The update marks a major milestone for Kustom, as it will further anchor the company in the local payment landscape.
According to Kustom’s research, direct payment is the most popular way to pay for online purchases in Finland and other Nordic countries. However, the Finnish preference for direct payment methods stands out compared to that of their neighbours: most consumers in Finland want to pay for their online purchases via Instant bank payment (40%*).
“Finns were one of the earliest adopters of online banking, and while consumers today have multiple different payment methods available, the vast majority of Finns still prefer to pay directly from their bank account. Now all Kustom merchants can offer a payment method that practically all Finns have – their bank account,” says Mikko Karjanlahti, Country Manager for Finland at Kustom.
“We know how important it is for merchants to offer payment methods that local shoppers know and trust to drive conversion. Having the right payment options in place can determine whether a customer completes the purchase. With more local payment options available, it is easier for merchants to provide a relevant shopping experience regardless of market.”
The Pay by Bank feature is implemented in partnership with Stripe and TrueLayer, Europe’s fastest-growing payments network. This enables merchants to offer a trusted local payment method, while allowing shoppers to pay directly from their bank account in seconds, without card details or manual data entry.
The launch in Finland is part of Kustom’s wider push for local payment offerings across Europe. Other newly launched payment options include BLIK in Poland, Bancontact in Belgium, Cartes Bancaires in France and TWINT in Switzerland.
Today, Kustom serves over 24,000 online merchants, for example Tokmanni, Musti & Mirri and Motonet in Finland. With its expanding portfolio of local payment methods, the company continues to strengthen its position as a trusted partner for merchants looking to grow across Europe.
*The data is based on a nationally representative survey commissioned by Kustom. The survey was conducted in April 2025 on the Ipsos Digital platform. A total of 4 000 respondents aged 18–65 participated across Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
